OK i've been reading my brains out and can't quite find the answer; here's my situation, i moved my old tank from one side of the loungeroom to the other, my fish and anubas are in another tank until i can put them back(3 bristlenose cats the others i have traded i have a new guy on hold at my lfs) i also put new gravel in, i placed the old gravel in several bags made of stockings and put them in the new gravel i kept the water and only rinsed the sponges in my fluval 204.
So what i'm wondering is how long should i wait, what lenght of mini cycle should i expect should i worry about putting in cycling fish before i get my new featherfin catfish fishhttp://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/featherfin.xml he's a good size and i dont want to risk anything with him.

I'm a bit confused
Are there any fish in the tank currently or are you supplementing with fish food?
If you're not adding an ammonia source the bacteria will die and you'll likely end up having to cycle the tank all over again.

there are no fish it was set up again yesterday afternoon about 4pm approx 25hrs ago is this too long or will it b ok if i put some in it now???? i just put a pinch of flakes in if that helps hope its not too late

Flakes are a messy way to create ammonia for bacteria. If you saved some of the gravel and filter media then you should at least be able to move some of the fish back over right away. Check for ammonia/nitrites the next day or 2 and move a few more if it's ok or wait and do any necessary water changes to keep the levels safe. I do wonder if your other tank is handling the sudden added bioload. I would say if you get all the fish back in the tank and everything checks out ok (0 for ammonia/nitrite) then add your new fish.

OK thanks will do my 3 BNs are back in along with my anubas the ammonia level is currently 0 will check for the next 3 days if all stays well get the new featherfin catfish and put him in yes???

oh and it was only 3 little bns in the other tank and just 26 hrs so i'm assuming its all ok pls input if this is incorrect thanks again

I personally would wait a week or so before adding the new fish....just to be on the safe side .

Yeah that sounds like a good idea i dont feel like taking chances with him
1 more question how long do i keep the old gravel bags in the tank for?

It'll take 3-4 weeks for the bacteria to grow in the new substrate...I'd suggest @least that long .


Make sure you acclimate slowly and carefully when you do pick him up .
