eat_ham222 Banned Posts: 97 Kudos: 72 Votes: 16 Registered: 20-Jul-2007 | Ok fellas and girl fellas My 30g is going crazy and i dont know why, si i have decided to evacuate some fish into my 10g. My 10g has been sitting for months with 5ish gallons of water. How do i cycle? I want to do everything by the book for a change, no mistakes, no problems, nada. So here is the situation.. 30g stocking -6 cories -3 cherry barbs -2gold gouramis -1 female betta -2 zebra danios -1 plec -3 platys( unhealthy) My last w/c was about 5 days ago, a hefty 40ish %. I lost 2 Cories, today and yesterday. When the 10g is up ( i no it will take long) i hope to add the cories, barbs, and betta and keep up good water quality there until my 30g is back up. Also.. i have 6 java ferns that i have kept in pots, should i take them out and add plant weights? I have a zillion questions that i can't remeber I will post them as i go.. Also.. what can i do to change my water cloudiness? i have no idea why it is cloudy. water perimeters tommorow! THANKIES HAM |

I'll put my bet on an ammonia spike with a bacteria blooom (white cloudiness) with the information that your Corydoras died. Healthy fish should not die in a water change unless you did something extremely wrong, such as not do a water change for years, or you gave them a huge temp shock. Waiting on those water parameters from your 30 gallon; it'll help us diagnose the problem. I'd empty the 10 gallon of its water; it's only 5 gallons, after all, and then set it all up. Assuming what's making your 30 gallon go to heck isn't disease, gravel or old filter media from the 30 gallon can help seed the 10 gallon with bacteria. Transfer a few of the fish; you should be able to transfer enough bacteria that there will be no danger of a spike in ammonia or nitrites, but keep tabs on these levels anyway. -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |

I'm not going to seed the tank with my 30.. to many chances of bad stuff spreading. Shinigami.. you hit the nail on the head.. or whatever the ex NO2- 0.3g/l NO3- 0.0mg/l(this takes 20 mins.. it's been 5 so maybe its 0.25) More to come! |

I am currently cycling a 10g with no fish, using a bit of ammonia to cycle with, some filter media, water and gravel from my stable, established tank and a bit 'o bacteria/cycle type product for a boost as well. I even have a couple live plants floating in there from the 20g. Keep with me and I will let you know how my fishless cycling is proceeding! Good luck my friend! |

brandeeno Mega Fish Posts: 929 Kudos: 636 Registered: 13-Sep-2007 | ham get a large one gallon jar or bigger and put the sick platties in there, run an air stone and dose up with melafix and pimafix! if you wanna save em that is... (a bucket will work well too.) \\\\\\\"an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of the cure\\\\\\\" |

Shinigami Ichthyophile Catfish/Oddball Fan Posts: 9962 Kudos: 2915 Registered: 22-Feb-2001 | A bubbler will help, but maybe in this situation it's best to get a bacteria cycling product to help boost your cycle as well. Or perhaps you can use *gasp* chemical filtration, such as ammo-lock and other such removers of ammonia and nitrite. For the short term, that is. Putting fish into a separate jar without a heater or filtration doesn't exactly sound like the best deal to me; the only reason I'd put a fish in a jar would be for transport or for a quick bath in meds, the latter of which thankfully I've never had to do. A jar is not exactly the best hospital tank. I'm not sure how your bacteria colony could've been hit so hard; I've never had fish die directly from ammonia or nitrite poisoning. Did you do something big recently, or get a ton of fish? Have you accidentally overfed? -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |

Peter17 Enthusiast Posts: 230 Kudos: 208 Votes: 1 Registered: 31-Dec-2004 | You say that you have a pleco..if it is a traditional pleco that everyone has they will reach well over 12 inches and that will be a future problem. As for the cloudiness, someone may have already said over feeding, but whenever i have a cloudy water problem i throw in a few drops of this reddish solution that costs maybe $3 from walmart. I comes attached to a yellow cardboard backing. Its called "Crystal Clear" and it looks like a knock off brand but I put 7-10 drops in and its amazing. Also keep the ferns in their pots for now until everything is situated then you can do whatever, but it dosent hurt to keep them in than take a chance..Keep us updated 20 GALLON LONG CURRENTLY EMPTY ~~~~ 10 GALLON W/ STRIPPED CONVICT |
