The number of fish you can have depends on what types you want, how big they get, what kind of theme (if any) you want...

There is not just a set number of fish we can tell you. Alot of beginners go by the 1 inch of fish per gallon rule. But I wouldn't. It doesn't apply to all fish and while it is a good start...many beginners try to fill up every inch and end up overstocking their tank.

170L is approximately 45 gallons (US). For those of us who go by gallons...

What types of fish are you interested in? Cichlids, peaceful community (tetras, gouramis, cories, loaches, rasboras....)?? It just depends on your preference.
Check out the profiles on this site to see what you like.

By pump do you mean filter? If you do, then that is your preference also. There are many types of filters: canisters, hang on back, internal...the list goes on.
I would get one that is rated for twice the volume of your tank. If you are going by liters, get one that is atleast rated for a 340L tank.

This is just a suggestion on what I think would be good stocking:

2 schools of tetras (10 of each kind)
10-12 cories
1-3 gouramis (the number depends on what type you choose)
1 small pleco or 4-6 ottos for algae

So that is about 40 fish...depending on what types you choose.

Like I said before...you can't just go by a number. It all depends on what kind of fish are available to you, what types you want, and how you set the tank up.

I use HOB filters on all my tanks. The brand I use is Aquaclear. They let you choose the media you use. I use only sponges. They are extremely easy to maintain. Cannister filters are great. They are a little more expensive though. I am thinking about getting one for my 55g tank. They type you get depends on how much you want to spend and what your plans are for the tank.

I shop at www.bigalsonline.com. They have good prices. Look on their website for all the filters and prices and you can see what you want.

Again, I would choose a filter that is rated for double your tank size. For example if you went with a Aquaclear HOB power filter, then a 70 or 110 would be fine. The 70 isn't quite double you tank size, but it would work. It is up to you which kind to get. Good luck!

That's a very nice setup...here's mine with a few revisions

1 very large school of harlequin rasboras
group of loaches (yo-yos?)
1 angel
1 BN

A good idea is to wander your lfs to see what's available & what you like, let us know and we can go from there.

Good luck

Sorry, i am a bit confused.
170 litre tank,40cm/20cm/16cm
Is 40cm/20cm/16cm the dimensions of your tank? Because if that is right, then your tank wouldn't be 170l, it would be 12.8.

Sorry if i have got this all wrong, but i am just confused about it.

EDIT: Did you mean inches?

I didn't notice that Definitely makes a big difference if it's cm or in.

I didn't think about that either...I don't use centimeters so I never know the conversion...I was just going by liters. Shows how much I actually read.

Good job i did then!

1 very large school of harlequin rasboras
group of loaches (yo-yos?)
1 angel
1 BN

This is a good idea, i like the large school, but it dosen't have to be harlies. Angels are good, or larger gourami such as snakeskins. The plec dosen't have to be a BN, there are plenty of other small plecos out there, or ottos if you are not keep on plecos. And loaches are (supposidly) great fun, but personally i prefur Corys. You can fit more corys in a tank, as they are smaller. The more the merrier!

They are good stocking ideas, personally I would do something like:

20 rummy-nose or 20 cardinal tetras
12 corydoras or 6 yoyo loaches
3 lace or blue gouramis OR 2 moonlight or snakeskin gouramis
2 bristle nose or 6 ottos

Go for 1 Gourami or 1 BN, or 5 Ottos
