Cherry barbs would are nice and do well in pairs. You could also get an ADF.

When you bought this betta, was he alone or was he in a tank with mates?

Being in a tank with others grealy reduces the chances of him being very aggressive.

I would recommend a school of danios or a school of white cloud minnows. They are active enough to avoid being harassed, and IME, aren't nippy. For the latter, you'll have to take an extra measure to find a compatible temperature for both, but it is possible.

At the LFS near me, none of them have have Bettas in community tanks. Actually I think only a couple have community tanks set up and they are only for display. You can never really know how aggressive a Betta will be until you put other fish in with them. For that reason you should have a smaller tank ready in case he is aggressive.
I have one of my Bettas in a 10g with 9 neons and 2 ottos. When I bought my Betta he was alone in one of those little cups and he lived alone in a 5g for a few months before moving to the 10g and getting tank mates.
I suggest 2-3 cherry barbs, 6-8 neons or cardinals, or 2-3 ADF's for your 10g. Add some live plants and you will have a very nice looking 10g tank.

thanks guys I bought a cory and a molly and the molly died. . .I suppose Swimmi (the betta) killed him as he was acting aggressively towards him, and now the betta is sitting at the bottom of his tank, hes moving, and looks normal, though he is at the bottom of the tank. . . is this normal? I think I will try some cherry barbs then. . .I liked how they looked, and hopefully Swimmi won't kill them but he is leaving the cory alone.

Sheesh sometimes I wonder what I was thinking when I wanted a fish. . .a lot harder to take care of then I thought, first Swimmi gets ich, then almost dies of a temp fluctuation, and now this. . .

Swimmi should be ok. My male Betta sits at the bottom alot and at the top. He is slow and I guess its from old age. As long as he doesn't have anything wrong physically he should be fine.

Thanks for not giving up on me lol, I tried the cherry barbs (got two) and they are all swimming happily, Swimmi does his own thing, and they dart around the whole tank. I was thinking of adding (my tank is cycled and the water nitrate ammonia etc perfect) 2 platies and 2 harlequin rasboras tommorow as well as three shrimp to eat the algae

Hi,
First of all,
Corys are schooling fish, and most are too large
for a 10g tank. Corys should be kept in a group
no less than 4 and preferably 6.
All except Pandas, Daintys (hasbrosus), Pygmys (hastatus),
and Nanus, are toooo big for a 10g tank.

Harlequin Rasboras are also schooling fish, they need to be kept in a group of 6.

Heres what You could do:

Return the cory Unless he is of the specified 4 species I listed. You have no room for a group of any others.
If it is one of those 4 species, get 3-5 more.

So then You have
1 Betta
2 Cherry Barbs
4-6 Corys
Thats enough fish, no more.

Or
1 Betta
2 Cherry Barbs
6 Harlequin Rasbora
Thats enough Fish, no more.

Bettas will eat shrimp. I wouldnt add shrimp to this tank unless you go for something like a single bamboo or wood shrimp.
