Hi All,

Apologies for adding to the long list of postings for 'stocking suggestions for...' but I couldn't find one for very small tanks.

My LFS have a package set for two smaller models of tank (NZ$100 and NZ$150) - I don't have the exact dimenions on hand, but I would estimate that they are probably around the 5 US Gallon / 20 Litre mark.

I was considering buying one as a desk piece, since they are so small and relatively light-weight.

The problem is that I can't think of anything that would tolerate such a small space :-(

We also have a 30 L and a 60L already running.

Could anyone suggest any species appropriate for a 20 L (or thereabouts) aquarium?

Besides the obvious betta, there were some good suggestions in this thread: [link=http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/General%20Freshwater/53392.html]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/General%20Freshwater/53392.html" style="COLOR: #FF0000[/link]. They're worth checking out.

The betta wasn't something that sprung to mind, I have to admit... But then, they don't seem to be as common here as they are in North America - probably because we don't have Walmart ;-)

I think that either a couple pairs of cherry barbs or a couple of dwarf puffers would look nice in there. It depends on what kind of fish you like. Is there anything from the above thread that interests you?

All those suggestions look pretty cool, I have to admit.

Cherry barbs are workable, but I don't think my LFS has Dwarf Puffers.

What I'm aiming for is variety, colour and species we don't already have (Clown Loaches, Yoyo Loaches, Platys, Dwarf Gouramis, Cardinal Tetras, Dwarf Oto, Zebra Danio, Mountain Minnow, Bronze Comet - not all in the same tank, naturally ;-))

If I went for a small schooling fish, how many could I fit?

I was thinking Guppies originally - but I've had enough of livebearer reproduction with those damned platys.

Go for all amle guppies. Five gallons just isnt enough for schooling fish.

I'll do graffiti,

I'm wary of asking for a specific gender of guppy - Its very tempting - but at the size the LFS sells them, it'd be virtually impossible to tell gonopodium from fin :-(

If you have a few fish stores around your area, check all of them out. A lot of stores here in the states have the male Guppies seperate from the females. So it's possible that stores around you also do this.

That's not a bad idea, but my hopes are not up :-P

Of the four chains I know of that sell fish, only one (my usual LFS) are specialist aquarium stores :-( The others are often rather ignorant - "Yes, sure you can keep 5 comets in a 2 gallon bowl!!" - so I doubt they'd be smart enuf to split the guppies

Katieb - if I never see another livebearer fry again, it will be too soon! :-P (Platys)
