It still stands: you have a fish that will reach upwards of three feet in a tank barely 20" long. I'm sorry, but there's no solution other than immediately acquiring a MUCH larger tank or pond (at least 50 gallons now, and 500+ very, very soon) or returning the fish. A betta would do very well in that tank; the koi will only sicken and die.

First of all, I dont think Ferret was being rude. Honesty doesnt equal being rude. The original poster has an enormously overstocked tank, which could very well be stunting and killing the fish right now. Yes, the fish is going into a pond "soon", but "soon" may be too late. Secondly, i also think her analogies are spot on. You wouldnt put a Great Dane in a closet, so why is it ok to put a 3 foot fish in a 10 gallon? Sure its 3 inches now, but there is such a thing as stunting...so it doesnt matter.

Ferret, you displaying the same rudeness to me as you did to the poster of this thread. I explained myself quite clearly in my last post. I'm not saying it is right to keep a koi in a 10 gallon tank. But, if you would listen to the person who made this topic, THE KOI IS GOING TO BE GIVEN AWAY. The fish is not going to stay in the tank that long. All that I am saying is that the fish can stay in the 10 gallon tank for the time being. Please understand what I am saying before you start giving me idiotic comparisons.

Yeah...fish have gills.

Would you keep a puppy in a closet?

Errr...actually...don't answer that.

First of all, there is a big difference between a child and a fish.

Second, I'm not encouraging anything. I guy himself said he is going to give the koi to the teacher. All I'm saying is that the koi can survive in the tank until he has a chance to give it away. All I'm guilty of is answering the person's question, instead of running around in circles like you.

Some time? I could keep a baby in a shoebox for "some time" but I'd be locked up for child abuse. I'm not sure I understand why you're recommending mistreatment of this fish. The owner is now aware of the potential problems and can make a change for the better; why encourage continued suffering for the koi?

As long as you clean it regularly, you can keep the koi in there for some time. They will not fight. But I would give it to your teacher as soon as I could.

They (maybe) won't fight, but they'll kill each other all right - the ammonia from the koi will kill the betta, and then the koi himself.

It seems like everybody's posting on this thing, but none are answering your question.

No they will not fight.

Either way, ideal minimum for a goldfish is like... 55 gallons and they don't get NEARLY as large as koi. (No matter the stupid misnomer of "goldfish bowl." ) I'm not a goldfish or koi expert, but I know enough to say that they grow HUGE and need large tanks simply to keep up with the waste they produce.

For a ten gallon tank, you could have perhaps a betta, and a group of cories, or shrimp, snails... You can do quite a bit with a ten gallon, but koi are not one of those options. If you want healthy fish, you have to be willing to provide them with a proper environment. Sometimes employees at fish stores are willing to sell incompatible fish just to make a buck.

You do realize koi can get to be about three feet long, right?

Even if it is a ten gallon, you should not have koi in it.

For best results...bring that koi back, and start over.

Wait... isn't 12 liters like three gallons? That fish needs a MUCH bigger tank (as a temporary solution) and ideally a HUGE pond. Koi are pond fish. If you can't provide the proper environment for it, I would suggest returning it to the store and getting something appropriate for that size tank, like a betta.

Edit: Oh, and welcome to FP!
