I want new fish for my 55g, which will be a community based around a school of 6 upside down catfish, and a school of blind cave tetras. Will a firemouth work in this tank?
What other fish could i have?

Hmm I'm not sure I'd add a firemouth. With 6 upside down catfish, and a school of blind cave tetras you're pretty well stocked IMO. If anything I'd say a school of very small tetras. The catfish get pretty big and chunky and I'd personally leave extra space for them in the tank.

I thought the problem was going to be aggression lol.
About stocking, this tank will be heavily over filtered, and will have 50% or more water changes weekly, and may be a bare bottom tank, hopdully this allows me to stock a little more than normal.

If the firemouth is unworkable, what could be put with just the syndontis?

I never noticed much aggression with either the firemouth or the catfish. Granted, the firemouths were reported to have eating all of Adams zebra danios, and were not allowed in with the WCMM .

The catfish in our tank was the one picked on, though in a larger school they may be a bit more aggressive. You're planning lots of hiding spots yes?
I wouldn't go bare bottomed, put in a very thin shallow layer of a small sized substrate at least.

i am planning to have heaps of hiding spots, i hope to fill the tank with driftwood on one side, and have open space on the other side.
I will use a thin layer of sand, as i already have plenty of it.

A school of 6 S. nigriventris, the normal upside down catfish, would be easy since they get about 4" tops. However, a school of 6 S. nigrita, the lace catfish which is also often sold as upside down catfish, is a little more trouble since they can get about 7", which certainly would take up most of the space in a 55 gallon. Thus, if you can identify what species you have then it'll certainly affect the potential stocking in this tank.

If that's the case, IMO you have a fair amount of room left.

Personally I wouldn't put a Firemouth in, but I'm not too big into cichlids; I wouldn't even be able to tell you how aggressive they would be. So personally I just take the precautionary route and not put a firemouth in.

Your tank is mostly open at the top, so some sort of surface fish such as a gourami might be a nice addition.
