It is hard to get everything you want in one kit.

My first tank when I got back into the hobby was a Juwel bow tank. Complete and fairly good for a first tank although I have to say that eventually I have to remove the filter as well as the heater that went with it and replaced with an external type. Still up and running well I have to say.

Got a complete kit for my 10g... had to replace the filter after a month-it sucked... course we bought the kit before we found this site... by the time we bought our 55gal we had read a LOT of posts and knew we wanted to buy our own components... we bought everything individually for that one. And made our own canopy, too.

i started with a 1G kit that had a air pump, UGF (fake one), and some gravel. i stuck 2 gold fishes in there

next i got a 10G kit from Marinland, this kit was decent except i didnt like the incandecent light on it. it came with a penguin mini, thermostat, aquasafe, and some food, i think that was all. i stuck 7 goldfishes that lasted for 3 yrs. im still using the tank and the filter but i changed the hood and am now planning to get a 30G tank

I did buy a kit, but most of the stuff in there was pretty crappy, but the kit was cheap. So i went out and bought a separate filter, lights, etc.

When I first started I had the tank given to me so I had to buy the rest of the components seperatly. When I got my 55 I got a kit.

Besides my betta tanks, which are cheap kits, I purchased everything seperately. They don't make 20 gallon long kits (that I've seen) and my ten gallon was given to me secondhand, as was the filter on that tank, etc. I like customizing too much to buy a kit...

When I bought my first 10 gallon kit at Jack's Aquarium and Pets a year ago, it had everything I needed in it. I was already looking at the exact same items it had in it. I asked them if I could exchange the filter with another one, and it was fine.

The tank worked out great. I had a few platies, guppies, and a nice clown pleco. However, I believe that if you're going for something bigger than a 10 gallon, buying all of the equipment separately is essential.
