I'd make this into a poll, but it's too much stuff to type into the options and I'm more looking into ideas and options rather than what is the most popular...

I've got a 10g I was breeding bettas in, and I currently have my male betta (in a big glass chimney) and some danios in there. I currently don't have any gravel or lighting in the tank.

Option One: I've got my hillstream loach in my 29g, but there isn't much current (or algae) and he's not too happy. I've got an extra powerhead I could put on the 10g and have an Asian River Biotope with my Hillstream Loach, Danios, and possibly a few other fish. The downsides: I would need to spend $10 to get riverstones and I COULD do a PVC sytstem on my powerhead to create UNIDIRECTIONAL watermovement, but that'd cost more money. COST: $10-$30

Option Two: I could keep it as is with my betta in the glass chimney COST: $0

Option Three: I could heavily plant it but I'd need new lighting, gravel, etc... COST:$30

Option Four: I could put some gravel in it and get a nice crayfish....maybe some floating plants too... COST: $30

What do you think? Any other good ideas (other than shellies or other african cichlids...they're too expensive here and I don't really want them)?

Any ideas would be appreciated

option 1- the asian biotope with the hillstream loach sounds very interesting. i am sure you could find an alternate source of river rock to get the cost down a little. it would be great to see how a hillstream loach behaves in something close to its native habitat. i would bet its personality would change dramatically, and the setup would look very unique.

I'd go for either killies or option 1.
Hillstream loaches really are coldwater and he would be much happier in a coldwater tank with a huge current.
I don't know how hillstreams interact with each other so i don't know how many you could put in there though....
good luck

I really like the idea of the Hillstream tank, but the only problem is they're territorial to others of thier own species if they're crowded. I could probably get 3 if they were all different species...but I doubt I could get 2 more species if them here...

Anybody else got any ideas?

I'd go with option 1 still....seems the most fun. If cost is an option start out with what's needed then go for what's extra.

I'm sure danios/bettas will be fine without the heater, and the hillstream wil likely enjoy it too.

I've decided to do the river tank

I got another powerhead in it, and I'm putting atleast one more filter (powerhead powered) in the tank so it goes with the direction of the flow. I'm going to match the temps of the 10g and my 29g (where my hillstream loach is currently) and then I'll move him to the 10g tonight

Yay...I got 2 more filters in the tank mounted on the side. Total (including powerhead) the tank is being turned over 30X an hour...I think it's enough current for the hillstream

I got my hillstream loach moved into the tank (I had to lure him into scooting himself onto a thin credit card ) and he seems to be doing okay

When I get some more money, I'm gonna get myself some riverstones to toss in there
