First, what we have: 29 gallon tank with a UGF on one powerhead. We also just added an aquaclear 50 HOB filter two days ago. As far as population goes, we have 6 brilliant rasboras, 2 cories, 1 horse faced loach, and a brand new bristlenose pleco. We have been bringing water in to our LFS for testing almost weekly, and I believe we are cycled- although I think we started stocking initially before the cycle was complete. At any rate, the last test showed ammonia and nitrite levels were fine, and I think a reasonable nitrate level as well. The problem we've been having is with white cloudy water and green water. The water is crystal clear for a few days, then it starts to get white cloudy for a few days and then turns almost solid green after a few days. We first cut back ALOT on light and feeding, but it got so bad, we added a flocculant, which worked wonderfully, but the problem returned a week later. We added flocculant again, and again it cleared up perfectly, but now it is staring to get white cloudy once more. I know flocculant should be used as a last resort, so I want to address the underlying problem, but its so frustrating to have a tank that looks slimy and gross in one's living room. Anyways, any ideas on what to do? Is there a connection between the white cloud and green cloudy? We've been doing partial water changes at least every other week since the beginning. Is this too much? It seems some other posts dealing with cloudy water suggest that it is... All help is much appreciated! Thanks! |

I believe (I'm not an expert, but I've had some trial-and-error and alot of help from the wonderful people here!) if you do water changes before your tank is fully cycld, then you're just legenthing the process. But since your tank is already cycled, you probably have a green water problem. To solve the green water, check your phosphates. That was the problem with mine(this feeds the algae), and you can simply buy a phosphate filter media that you can cut to fit any filter. Just ask your LFS to test the water for phosphates(Mine did it for free!!). Also, you can turn the lights off for a few days.In a course of about three days, my tank has gone from totally green, to almost crystal clear! Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.....I'm just so happy with all the help that's been givven and want to help others. Green water can be truly frustrating!:#( |
