i asked a lfs what would be the best substrate for african cichlids and they said crushed coral would be the best. each peice is about 1" long and .5" wide, give or take a couple of mm. would this crushed coral be the best for my african cihlids?

I use crushed coral in my tank and it is fine, some people use coral sand as there preferred substrate ,the good thing with crushed coral is that you are less likely to get anaerobic spots due to its size, however you can always crush it up more if you want a finer smaller sized substrate.

Gibson SG you know you want one!!

Well I have 20lbs of crushed coral(along with 40lbs of ECO cichlid substrate in my 120),but it is not that large(1"x.5". Maybe its not crushed? It will be fine for your tank and keeps the PH up(which I do not need 8.2). Use a rubber mallet on coral under a towel if you want smaller pieces. Make sure you do not do this on your kithen table.

i had crushed coral in mine but i switched to the black and white argonite(spelling) sand. i personally think it looks nicer plus the fish like to play in it. take mouth fulls of sand and spit it all over the place, pick food out of it and dig deep holes. one of the biggest reasons i switched though was becaus of my synodontis catfish. i think the coral was too rough on there underside.
