Right now i just have a couple of bettas, but i really want to take it to the next level. Im thinking about a 10 or 20 gal. tank, but i dont know much about pH, and i havent done much research yet. But i was wondering if anyone had any fish suggestions. maybe something colorful-and not too expensive but i really am just looking for anyone w/ suggestions or knows about any really cool fish.

Tetras. One or two or three different schools of tetras (depending on your tank size and the tetra size) would be cool. They're cheap, often pretty hardy, colorful, and fun to watch. Some will say that they're boring, but I like watching my lemon tetras set up their social heirarchy; I like watching rummynose tetras (though they are delicate) go about their schooling; I like the colors of the garnet and blue tetras as they flash in the light. This is a very diverse group of fish, so almost everyone can find a species that they like.

Yea tetras are good, or maybe some flagfish or playts.

Platys grow too large for a 10 gallon tank.
I would suggest the 20g for you, or even a bigger tank. The bigger the better for a beginner.
55g is probably the best size all round, but if you could get a 33 or so, that would be good too.
For a 10g you dont have too many options, few fish.
For a 20 you could do this:
10 Small schooling fish such as Neons, Cardinals, Glowlight, Lemon Tetras, Pencilfish, Threadfin Rainbowfish, Celebes Rainbowfish.
2 Bolivian or Blue German Rams
OR
6 Platys (4 females 2 males)
1 Cool Pleco like a Clown, or Bristlenose, or Candystripe etc
OR
15 Tiger Barbs
OR
8 Buenos Aires Tetra
8 Corydoras
Or you could get a 29g tall tank, and do
2 Angelfish
4 Upside Down Catfish

Just like sneaky said bigger is better. 10 and 20's seriously limit the stock you can keep. 10's pretty much rule out most schooling fish and 20's rule out anything under 4" IMO.
For me all the tetras I've had and seen are just plain boring to watch . Fish family of choice is cyprinids, smaller barbs, white cloud mountain minnows, danios ect would work for a 20, although once again a 55 is much more acceptable. Corys are another favorite for their activity level.

Thanks so much guys. wow that really gives me alot of options. I'll have to se how much room i have, but it certainly does sound like the bigger the better. Now i just have to do some more research and figure out which ones will work best. You guys have really helped me alot. You're awesome!
