I am thinking about getting either a 10 or 20 gallons tank. I would like some advice on the stocking.I'm thinking
a school of guppies
a dwarf gourami
a few ghost shrimp

Any suggestions would be great. I'm wondering whether the gourami would be compatible with the guppies.

As for the size of the tank, I'd highly suggest getting a 20 gallon (or larger). The stock you suggest will not work in a 10 gallon tank.
Also, if you're gettting guppies you'll need to be able to do something with the babies .

I agree with babelfish. Start with as large a tank as you can manage/afford. A larger tank a lot more stable in terms of water chemistry. That is, the effects of something drastically changing resulting in the loss of fish is reduced in a larger tank.
As for the guppies, that's fine. Please note that if you buy all males, they won't reproduce. If you get at least one female, and are able to keep it alive long enough, chances are darn good that it will reproduce. Guppies, as are most livebearers, are the rabbits of the fish world. They will produce fry, and more fry, and more fry, and more.
I've found breeding to be a fascinating and rewarding facet of the hobby. It's pretty exciting to see all those new micro-sized fish suddenly appearing all of the sudden.
You can be the envy of the neighborhood!
I've never kept guppies and gouramis togher in one tank, so I can't say if the fry would end up being gourami snacks or not.
I always like to recommend corydoras. They are industrious little fish which do well at cleaning up the tank.

The larger the tank is the better. As stated above, go with the biggest tank that you can afford.
