As you know I got a new 55 gallon for Christmas. I also had a 29 gallon hex that has been set up for quite a while and is doing great. I haven't lost one fish and the Angels are huge, also the tank remains crystal clear. This tank runs a Whisper 40 filter, and the 55 uses a Whisper 60 filter. In case you don't know they are basically the same filter, with the exception that the 60 has two sides and the 40 one. I was thinking of cutting the "aerobic grid" in half and doing the same to one side of my other filter. First question, is this worth doing? I mean, will it speed up the process that much? and second, am I risking messing up the other tank in the process. Your input is appreciated.

I don't think it would cause any harm to the existing setup and should help significantly with the establishment of the new tank's cycle.

Will some of the current fish be moving into the new tank with the bacteria (sounds funny when one puts it like that )...Personally what I'd do is set the filter for the new tank up on the 29 and leave that running as long as possible. Squeeze the sponges or floss over the new filter next time you do a water change that'll deposit some of the bacteria onto the new sponges.

Then if it's been 3-4 weeks just move the new filters onto the new tank and you're ready to go. If it's been less time I'd play musical filters. Put an old filter on the new tank, leaving the new filter on the old tank to finish seeding. Since the substrate in the old tank is fully established you (hopefully) wont have as much of a minicyle if any. Then switch the filters back after the new filter is fully seeded.

Did that make sense if not blame the painkillers .

Get a few filter sponges, put them in the old tank for a while, then put them and some fish in the new tank. Wait a week, start adding more fish slowly.
