I would hope you dont' have paper ones saved up, yep that's what I used last time I changed the substrate in one of my tanks. They're shallow and have good surface area .

^_^

hehe dont worry, i wont have goldies. i thought of that last night around midnight and i was dead tired... i probably will get some corys or other bottom feeders, im rethinking the platies... i dont want another livebearer species in my tank because of cross breeding. so ill just add some corys and maybe some geo-lites.

can corys or geolites help cycle?

i also just recieved my package from bigals. the filter is HUGE!!!! the intake tube goes all the way down to the bottom of my tank with out a extension. im going to let it run in my 10G so it can get bacteria on the wheel. im also make the wheel go as fast as possible so it can help empty out the water in the chamber.

Yes, please, please, please leave the goldies out of the tanks

I'm not sure I'd suggest cycling with neons, even if you are adding seeded material.

Have you thought of your bottom feeders yet Corys always add something to a tank .

Well I'm not going to get into the goldfish-in-small-tanks issue...personally I just wouldn't do it because you're talking about combining fresh and coldwater fish. I'll leave it at that

Goldies need higher ended gallonage to thrive (50+). You could keep them there for about a year, then they'd grow out of it (provided the water is clean and filtered and you supply them with an adequete diet) Otherwise, they'll stunt. ;_;

ok thanks.

so when i get my new tank i think ill use the emperor on my 10g and the P-Mini and AC150 on my new 30G so the tank gets seeded from the filters and the emperor gets seeded from my 10G. ill also add a container of gravel and 5G of water from the 10G, some NIC and water conditioner of course.

now for the fishes... i have 5 neon tetras, would they be hardy enough to help my tank cycle?

how should i go about setting up my new 3ft 30g tank when i get it?

so far i think ill just move all of my fishes and my water in the 10G to the new tank. then add the other 20G of water along with Cycle and Ammo-Lock/Aquasafe (depends on which i buy).

ill run my AC 150 on that tank along with my emperor fillter (which im gonna order). ill stick soem gravel from old tank into the AC 150 and the media container for the emperor.

thats my plan so far... please give me some suggestions, i dont want my fishes to die because of new tank syndrome.

thanks in advance

Well if you don't want any one to think your crazy, you can also use a shallow dish, or even an old take out container...washed of course

Put your old gravel in a pair of pantyhoses (stocking) and put in your new tank...then you can just haul it out when your cycle is complete.

Well, by seeding the tank with the filter and gravel, you're on the right track, but I wouldn't do both. I would instead seed the 30 gallon with some gravel from the ten, fresh water, and add maybe one-two of the hardiest fish you have in that ten gallon. I wouldn't move the filter yet because I would leave the ten gallon running while cycling the 30 gallon. Using NIC will help too, but I'd still run both tanks for awhile.

Then, after a couple weeks, I'd move a few more of the fish from the ten gallon into the thirty gallon. If all stays well and the water parameters check out, THEN I'd move the last of the fish from the ten gallon to the thirty gallon.

The reason I would take this so slow is because if you put all the fish in there from the ten gallon, PLUS the filter, PLUS the gravel, PLUS NIC, I think you might get a massive ammonia spike that could kill your fish. Taking your time and doing it slowly would help that ammonia addition to take place over a period of time, so the bacteria growth rate could keep up with the ammonia...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

Running the new filters on the old tank for 3-4 weeks prior if you can will help. Moving gravel ect will also help, so you're on the right track there.

Stocking with the hardiest of the fish for the new tank and stocking it slowly and knowing what you're doing and I really don't see you having too much of a problem. I'd go with the NIC, never used ammoloc when cycleing although in theory it's supposed to work.

^_^
