BeastKeeper![]() Big Fish Posts: 444 Kudos: 389 Votes: 47 Registered: 27-Apr-2004 ![]() ![]() | i have an empty 40errium that was reinforced to hold water. i was hoping to make this into a mangrove tank. so i was wondering what kind of filter i would use in this situation? would i use an under gravel filter or a sumbmerced filter? what kind of fish could put in about 10 to 15usg of water? could i add frogs or newts? are there any kind of plants that can be in water and land? thanks for answering any of these questions! THANKS!!! ![]() [span class="edited"][Edited by BeastKeeper 2004-07-28 11:00][/span] |

The water will have to be brakish. Mudskippers would be a good choice. Or, do you just want it too look like a mangrove swamp but be freshwater? EDIT: Here is a good site about brackish setups: http://badmanstropicalfish.com/brackish/brackish.html [span class="edited"][Edited by SolubleFish 2004-07-27 20:12][/span] |

I do not know much about canister filters, but I have good things about eheims and fluvals. Here are filters for a good price (click on filters, then canisters): http://bigalsonline.com [span class="edited"][Edited by solublefish 2004-07-28 06:25][/span] |

Those guys are awsome. I know some newts release toxins into the water, so it could be good to stay away from them. If it were my tank, I would fill up most of the tank with water (maybe 3/4) and have the mangrove looking wood and decorations branch out of the water. Not all mollys reach 5 inches. There are three species of mollies that are sold under that name. One species is called Poecilia sphenops and will reach 2.5. |

BeastKeeper![]() Big Fish Posts: 444 Kudos: 389 Votes: 47 Registered: 27-Apr-2004 ![]() ![]() | i thought about getting a couple of green spotted puffers and some archer fish. so right now ill do some research on both. i attempted to get a small mangrove swamp fell by filling a ten gallon tank up half way , then push all the gravel so there was 3" of gravel out of the water and put a plant on the gavel. then to see how it looked with fish i put my betta in it. he has about 5usg to swim so he looks comfortable. this really sparked my desire to do this mangrove swamp!!! is there any kind frog or a small turtle that would work with brackish conditions? |

Sounds nice. ![]() As for the frog/turtle, I have no idea. Best place is to reasearch yourself or ask another forum. All I know is that if you want a turtle, you will be in it for the long haul. Turtles live a loooong time. |

For land they had various lizards and I think a snake.. I could give you a link to a forum the guy that maintained it is at? |

Pacific Blue Eyes are found in Mangrove wetlands here, and would be great. Ever considered an African Dwarf Frog? I have never owned one, and know basically nothing about them, so i cannot help you there, just suggesting it. Maybe look into them. I know here at my LFS you can buy mangrove driftwood roots, well that is the only type of driftwood they sell. Maybe you could fill the tank up 1/2 way or 3/4 and have mangrove roots sticking out. -- Gomer [span class="edited"][Edited by Gomer 2004-07-30 18:49][/span] |

BeastKeeper![]() Big Fish Posts: 444 Kudos: 389 Votes: 47 Registered: 27-Apr-2004 ![]() ![]() | yeah after some research the archer gets about 10 inches so their out of the question. the green spotted puffers get to be about 6 inches. if i went to a 100usg these guys would work but for my 40 usg terrarium i could maybe fit some figure 8s or some dwarf puffers, but i would much like the ease of the mangrove being a fresh water. but a big mangrove root would set the mood a little better so thats a must. but i like linzi's idea with the snake! but im getting a couple of mudskippers. so what fish could i get with these guys anys and what kind of substrate would be best? |

Mudskippers would be a good choice. Or, do you just want it too look like a mangrove swamp but be freshwater? You can acclimate certain species of Mangrove over to FW......as a matter of fact, most mangroves sold to SW hobbiests are FW raised and have to be acclimated over a month (or more) to handle full SW. Target usually sells mangroves planted in small containers in the spring. |
