i just got a new tank and i was just wondering how some of you transfer your fish to the new tanks? I know that i need to let them get used to the new tank's temp before actually letting them out in the new tank but i just wanted to know of a good way to transfer them without stressing them out too much?

zerosix,
If you're transfering fish from two tanks in your house that have pretty close PH then it won't take quite as long. If it's for fish you've just brought home I'd suggest checking the ph to decide how long to take during the acclimation process. Here's what I do.

~ Turn off the tank lights
~ Set the bag in to acclimate to temperature (15-20 min)
~ Pour out a small portion of the bag water into a seperate container (dump in on some house plants )
~ Every 15-20 I add a small ammount of tank water to the bag using a plastic drinking cup. As the bag gets full I dump the water out (yes I have some very happy house plants )
~ After an hour or two (depending on how different the PH is) I net the fish and add them to the tank. If it's something like ottos though I spend 6-8 hours doing this....
HTH a bit .

If you're going tank to tank in your house, siphon water from the tank the fish are in into a bucket. (Just enough so the fish will be able to swim.) Take the bucket over to the tank you want to put them in and start a siphon using air tubing. the fish will get used to the new water by the time the bucket is full. Then as long as you've taken some old water out put some new in.

Use the same process getting fish from elsewhere but put the bag in a bowl and the bowl in the bucket and stop the siphon now and then to go slower.

Hope it's clear, Mike

Just a tip, but rinse out and save the bags next time you get fish or plants....I've found them really handy as I've been moving fish around between home and office a bit in the last few months.
