For clams it doesn't matter how many fish or really even what kind although some fish like loaches might manage to eat them. What really matters is lots of water movement and food. The messier and smaller pieces the food you feed the more likely they are to survive. If you feed all solid foods like some types of pellets there won't be enough floating in the water for them to filter out.
Unlike clams ghost shrimp are able to move around to find food so they don't need much for water movement. They are also very good at finding leftover food so are alot less likely to starve. The downside for shrimp is alot of fish see them as food.

If you do ever decide to get clams, you will probably need to find something that will leack calcium into the water to help from shell decay.

Some people stick them right in their filters.
