I noticed that a very, very tiny snail was creeping up the side of my 20g tank tonight when I got home... Where in the world could he have come from? Could he be bad for the tank?

I just bought some new Harlies to add to my tank today, could he have come in with them? Although I don't see how since I didn't see him on any of the Harlies and they were all tiny themselves so I think I would have noticed him.

Very confused... :%)

I think they usually come in on live plants. Do you have those?

No... lol... :%)

I did have some hornwort quite a number of months ago. And I have done complete cleanings of the tank since then, wouldn't I have noticed him had he come on the hornwort? Wouldn't he be bigger by now?

So, I assume he won't have any kind of negative affect on the tank? Will I need to do anything special to make sure he remains alive and healthy?

Well, I am certainly not a snail expert, and I suppose it depends what kind of snail he is. But I had some in a tank, and they ate algie, and food off the bottom. They were really no problem foe me.

I do believe however that snails can be easily killed by most fish medications (including salt) so I suppose the down side of having snails is you don't have as many choices to medicate other sick fish with. I guess you'll just have to keep them healthy!

Hopefully somebody else with more snail info will respond with better tips.

Snails are pests & can survive in alot of difficult conditions. I would say it came with the plants & survived the cleaning of the tank & now he's out again. If you don't want it, just kill it, but you might see some more aswell.
