Got him in a tank with one betta. Does he need lots of oxygen in the tank? Bubbles? or no? Curious? Currently I have no oxygen bubbles in the tank.

do you have a filter?

if you dont, then yes it needs a "bubbler"

Algae Eating Shrimp are fairly hardy. Though I've never kept them myself, we have them at work. They get to be bigger than ghost shrimp and love to eat sinking foods. A small airstone would probably be appreciated, but I don't think that a lack of one would kill it, unless you don't keep up with maintance. I'm assuming you do weekly WC's.

Thanks! I put the bubble stone back in. I didn't mention I had a fairly large live plant in there anyway. I still decided to put the bubble stone back on, and hopefully the plant will survive with it on.

Yes the plant will do just fine with or without the "bubble stone" i think plants seem to thrive with it in there because there is more oxygen in the tank and and in the night plants use some oxygen. So with a bubbler there is little chance that your fish or plants will suffocate

There's argument on the side of excessive aeration actually increasing CO2 - not a ton, but a bit. So (given the amount of air any airstone will give out relative to the size of a bowl) you're probably helping more than hurting the plant by running the airstone.

Not all plants enjoy turbulence, but it wasn't a co2 thing that caused the problem I'm sure. Adding an airstone to a planted tank if you're not injecting co2 isn't going to make a difference to the plants.

On another note, as soon as that shrimp molts it's going to be supper anyway unless it knows of a good hiding spot in a tank that small, I'm thinking. It depends on the betta's personality I guess, but my betta killed 6 ghost shrimp out of curiosity.. didn't even eat them.
