I'd say your best bet to try is a ghost shrimp. They will eat some type of aglea stay small and dont become a pest.

We have an amano shrimp that is supposed to eat algae. They are a little bigger than the ghost shrimp and are known for their algae eating habits.

I personally use ghost shrimp ... while not great at it they will help ... they are mostly used as a live food source for my african tank. Amano shrimp are supposed to be really good ... but they are hard to find and ususally pretty expensive. There is cherry shrimp that are supposed to be good algae eaters. These all stay about 1.5" full grown.

The last kind i know of is called the wood/singapore shrimp ... it filters the water with its appendages and pulls the algae out of the water column ... but they get up to about 4 inches

Ammano shrimp will probably be the best algae eating shrimp you can get, but they're usually not very cheap ($5-6 here), and they're not very easy to find (I've only seen them at one LFS here once).
