Anyone know if Amano shrimp are O.K. in new tank? Are they hardy enough to withstand cycling in a planted tank.

I would like to add a few, but I should probably wait. I also read that they might be sensitive to some water conditioners, don't know if Prime is one of them.

Shrimp are very sensitive to ammonia and nitrites and should only be added to a well established tank. Ghost shrimp might survive a very minor cycle but other than that shrimp should not be added to a tank with even the slightest ammonia.

Thanks Sham, I'll hold off until the tank cycles, although with all the plants and heavy water changes I don't anticipate a major one.

Well, no Prime wont hurt shrimp, I use it in my tank and have a shrimp.

Your tank will go through a major cycle if its new, regardless of plants and water changes. In fact, you should try to avoid water changes if you can through your cycle as it will take less time.

That depends if you want to be impatient or have healthy fish at the end. I always do lots of water changes, cycle slowly, and keep the ammonia at least below 1ppm. That way I don't have to go buy some hardy but completely useless fish, put it through the torture of cycling a tank, and then have to find a way to get rid of it so I can stock with the fish I want. It doesn't take that much longer cycling at low ammonia levels and there's no reason not to wait. A little patience gets you a long way in this hobby.

Fishless cycling would be a much better way to go.
The thing is, I cycled my 25g tank, and I was doing 25% water changes 2 times a week, and the tank hadnt cycled after 4 months. I stopped doing water changes, lost a couple of white clouds, but the tank finally cycled in only 9 days after that.
If I had to cycle another tank, I would do it "sans fish".

Isn't most of the bacteria growth in the substrate and filter media. Also in a heavily plant tank the plants should be assisting in getting rid of toxic elements to fish.

Prime takes iodine out of the water, which they use to help them molt (what I've heard anyway).

I've got 7 Amanao that I've had for about 2 yrs now. I've found that as long as the tank is cycled you can put them in as long as your feeding either them or other fish...they pick up anything that falls to the bottom. I used Bio-Spira for my 135 gal and put the shrimp and angels in within 3-4 days afterwards. they've been in it for 2 weeks now and all are doing great!

That's good to hear, do you know if the ghost shrimps are as hardy? Thought I had an Amano, but actually it's a Ghost.

I did a search on prime and shrimp on google and several different forums and could find nothing saying it was bad for shrimp tanks. In fact I found several people using prime in their shrimp only tanks and having no problems.

I have a few shrimp tanks with a few different species of shrimp. Seachem's Prime does not harm them in any way that I've seen. Also, I don't think it removes iodine from the water. Iodine has been rumored to help shrimp molt, but ingesting iodine , as I understand it, is the only way they actually absorb it. If in fact Prime removes iodine, I know plenty of people that raise shrimp and haven't added the first drop of iodine to their tanks and their shrimp molt just fine, so I don't see that being an issue either.
