Just curious, I have my electric blue and keep calling it a "she", wouldn't want it to have a compex if it was male.. (yes, I talk to my fish, I'm a looney!)

Females have short, stubby pincers...males have long and slender pincers...that's about the easiest way to tell

There are a few other differences as well, but they involve taking the cray out of the water and dissecting it's tail searching for parts

Eee.. no dissecting here! Any good refernce sites for "pincher" pics? This is my first cray, and basically, the first I've seen in my life. I have no clue wether it's pinchers are long or short...

Just look around on the internet...do a google img search...

It's really obvious if you look at a few males and a few females...it's easy to tell once ya got something to compare yours to

I'll take a photo tonight.

If you can either pick up your cray or put it in a clear bottomed container, you can see its reproductive organs.

No dissecting necessary, and it is more reliable than the nipper method. (i say more reliable as some cray have both a male and female set of reproductive organs, its not unheard of, but it is pretty uncommon)

Anyway, its all about nubby bits on the top section of its legs where they attach to the belly.

I've been scouring google, but have YET to find a good reference for pincher size.

Thanks Callatya, pictures would be very helpful. I'll attempt to pick it up... last time I was moving decor around, it literally followed my hand.. I think it wanted me to "stay for dinner".

Don't worry...unless it's huge I don't think it will try to hurt you.. Mine's really friendly and follows my hand around the tank and everything...but she'll let me pick her up and hold her etc...she probably wants attention

Here's a pic of my female cray...the pic didn't turn out well...but atleast you can see her claws okay...you can see that they're short and stubby...

OK, thats a doctored picture, so i'll get a nice one of Spunky's 'bits' tonight when the camera is charged, but that is what you are looking for, either sort of transparent circles on the 2nd set of legs, or spurs on the last set of legs.
