I'm breeding my pest snails from my 20 galon to feed my puffer fish and I'm wondering what's the best way to keep them healthy and multiplying? Right now they're in a 2 gallon hex with a small airpump run filter keeping the water clean and I'm feeding them Omega One Tropical flakes. The temp in the tank is about 77 degrees. Is there a way to encourage faster growth and breeding? Thanks!

Raise your temp to 80-82 Degrees....Add plenty of plants and food source, and they will multiply like crazy....try algae wafers as well....

I can give you some if you're willing to fly to Malta.

Yes, just add some plants & food & they'll multiply in days..........

Thanks! I noticed some eggs this morning when I fed them, so I know they're breeding. I'll raise the temp like you said.

Convince yourself that they are a pest and you don't want them in that tank...then forget about them. Before you know it, the tank will be overrun.

LOL, jake. That sounds like it would work. Pests grow and breed much faster than things you actually WANT to grow and multiply.

I throw a piece of lettuce in the tank I breed my snails in, they love it.

I bred mine in a small tank as well. I would just throw in Aglae wafers a lot and kept the temp up. They also do very well in HOB filters. I was quite surprised when I was cleaning it one day to discover a multitude of them and lots of egg sacs. It was interesting though because the filter was actually incredibly clean. The interesting thing was that even though the filter was full of them, the tank had no snails and still has no snails in it even though my puffer has since died.

Yeah, they seem to LOVE HOB filters. Every week when I do my tank maintenance, I find tons of baby snails in my filter. Now I just toss 'em in the snail tank to grow up as puffer chow.

yeah, I used to do the same, have you ever had trouble with them stopping the filter by jamming it? I had it happen once or twice, but only on my small filter...I guess the 300 GPH filter was a bit too much for the snail shell.

They've never caused any problems in my filter. It's a Penguin Bio-wheel 125, so maybe it's too powerful for them to mess with as well. They mainly congregate on the filter cartridge. Maybe they're helping me out and keeping the cartridge cleaner longer.

Yeah, that's what I've found. It's like a refugium for snails! It seems to be the perfect environment for them.

I agree. There's always some sort of food for them (bits of plants, etc.) and no fish can get to them to have a little snack.
