I keep pufferfish, so I have a small tank for raising snails. They are constantly laying eggs and are multiplying very well.

I am concerned about the calcium level in the tank, however. What is a good way to add calcium to the tank in a usable form for the snails?

Thanks.

you can put crushed coral in your substrate or your filter and it will keep the calcium levels up in your tank.

The best way to add calcium is probably kent marine calcium in a liquid form. It won't raise your ph like the other ways and is easily used by snails. Add 1/4-1/2 the dose listed for marine tanks. The cheap way is crushed egg shells(clean well or you could have water quality problems) or broken up cuttlebone sold for birds which may raise ph. Also keep the ph above neutral or it will break down the snails shells and make it harder for them to use calcium.

If you're breeding them for the puffers, why are you worrying about their shells? I wouldn't think it would matter.

The reason to provide snails for puffers is so the snail shells will help wear down the puffers' ever growing beak. Snails with flimsy shells would not serve the purpose as well.
