They do very very poorly in bare tanks and much prefer driftwood. Ideal setup would be a planted tank with branching driftwood reaching up in front of the filter outlet. They will sit on the driftwood in front of the highest area of flow to filter out bits of food. They like to blend in to their surroundings and without wood and plants to hide in they seem to get stressed about being unable to blend in and hide. In a small tank they will not be able to filter enough food so to feed mine I mix very finely crushed fish foods with Kent Marine ZooPlex and feed it to them using a dropper. Any liquid food designed for filter feeders will work. They will also pick up bits of food on the substrate but they much prefer to filter the water and mine only go hunting for food on the bottom when they haven't been fed for days. They also aren't very fast so any fish in the tank will get such food first. Watch the water quality because much of the food you add for them will be missed especially if you can't manage to squirt it directly in front of them. You can tell they are feeding when they stick their fans in their mouth and then spread them back out for more food. You can also see larger particles on their fans. |

If you have well water you may already have iodine. They are adaptable to most water conditions. They are filter feeders and will eat mostly anything they can get their paws on. They prefer to have highly oxygenated water with some current. Great shrimp. My favorites. Grow to about 2.5-3 inches. Leave the exoskeleton in the tank after they molt.
