I think they are in freshwater through their entire lifecycle. The problem is gouramis and shrimp rarely mix well. Especially the smaller species of gouramis. The platies and barbs also aren't a gurantee on what they'll do. I'd test it with some cheap ghost shrimp first. If ghost shrimp survive for weeks then other shrimp should be safe but it's still not a 100% gurantee. If the ghost shrimp disapear then you know everyone would just be enjoying a nice meal of live shrimp. |

Thanks for figuring it out. Are they hard to get a hold of? The only shrimp I have seen anywhere are ghost shrimp. Anyone know why it is so hard to find anything but ghost shrimp? Christina |

If you are looking for algae control then the ghost are much better at that. I am not 100% sure but you might want to be careful with the ram and shrimp. I think they can eat the shrimp also. If you were to get ghost shrimp I know for a fact you can put 4-6 shrimp per gallon in your tank before it starts to influence your bioload. So if you really liked the lil' buggers you could have as many as 72 ghost shrimp in there at one time lol. That would be interesting. Also the shrimp do jump so you want to be careful about them if you do not have a cover on your tank. They will jump out at times. Hope this helped Christina Sorry for any typos |

But before that I have 1 question could the shrimp injure any of the fish I am especially concerned that they may pick on the cory's. Ghost shrimp won't make a visible dent in most types of algae but they are very useful for cleaning up my fry tanks. Amano shrimp are one of the best algae eaters. Usually shrimp don't attempt to leave the tank. I've never seen mine try to climb up the filters or tubing to the co2 units. They do climb on driftwood or rocks to find food but don't seem interested in leaving the tank. Not saying it couldn't happen to a curious shrimp but it's not that common. The front half of my 90g isn't even covered and I have several rainbow shrimp in there. I plan on adding more along with midget shrimp. The only concern in that tank might be the ram but it will probably ignore the shrimp. Ghost shrimp have been known to eat very small fry but otherwise most shrimp are harmless to fish. There are a few species that can eat fish but I've never seen them sold in stores here or the online sites I order from. |

Crystal red, tigers, and cherry shrimp have proven more effective against algae in my tanks. Dwarf Gouramies are definetly a gamble as they will most definetly try and eat the shrimp, especially the birghter colored ones as they are easier to spot. But i guess with red gravel they would blend in. I have only ever found one shrimp to escape my tank so yes you willr arely get an adventurer who chooses to see what's on the other side of the glass. If you are ordering shrimp online I suggest aquabid or franks aquarium. I would say avoid azgardfens for shrimp becuase they tend to have a lot of dieoff, and on top of being expensive they charge the crap out of you in shipping. they charged me $70 to ship my shrimp O.o HTH, Megil Last edited by Megil Tel'Zeke at 26-Oct-2005 08:10 ![]() |
