As mentioned before, floating doesn't mean the snail is dead or sick. It could and mostly likely be air trapped in their lung.

My snails are big fans of romaine lettuce, apples and spinach. I personally leave the shells of my invertabrete's in the tank as a little grave yard.

i try to feed the next slice of squash after the snail has eaten all of the one i gave him. mine eats it the same way, but mine will finish the rind pretty quickly, even floating around the tank to get the last bite

Hmm...He does it eat fairly quickly mooon. Usually he eats out the middle overnight, and the rest will take some time, if I choose to leave it in that is...

seed: yes

ferret: if your snail is eating the cucumber up pretty fast, then you might want to feed him a little more often

Not to steal the post, but what happens when you have hundreds of MTS, and alot of them die. Would my tank be cluttered with empty shells?

Update: hehe...he's not dead. Keeps floating, but certainly isn't dead. Very, very weird little critter. I'm gunna be keeping a close eye on him.

Normally he gets cucumber every couple of days, do you guys think I should feed him or leave him alone???

When I first got mystery snails, they loved to play dead for days at a time. They seemed to know when I was getting ready to dispose of them because they'd always start moving right at the last minute.

When they're really dead they smell pretty bad. I usually wrap the dead ones up in paper towel or newspaper and put them in the rubbish.

Simple question...

What do you do when you have a snail die? Not a little tiny baby...one of a decent size. I'm curious...Thanks.

Eh, tough call. Sometimes my snails "float" like they're dead, but when I pick them up the move.

Sadly, my favorite and largest apple snail (about 2" or so in diameter) passed away--I ended up burying him/her where I bury my other past pets. I miss the big guy.

no, not the shell, just the body. you can best tell if your snail is dead by smelling it. if it smells dead, it probably is

take a look at a tankful at your lfs. some of them look dead, while others do not. i hate buying them unless i see them in motion.

when i am sure one of mine has died, i like to fry it in a bit of butter and garlic. not bad with a saltine cracker or two. seriously, i am never quite sure when one of mine has perished, so i just let it be till the other fish start picking at it. then it becomes a fertilzer pellet for my mesquite trees. most of the time, it is merely resting for several days.

I just recently read that snails can appear dead for 2-3 days at at time. Here's one of the best websites and this is where I read it.

Awesome site.

The remains of the snail should dissappear rather quickly, their bodies are highly degradable and most is water. If it good size I would not flush it with the shell, might get stuck in plumbing. When did you notice it had died? Some times they go into hibernation. Though, if the snail fell out of the shell or the protective shell plate fell off the snail it is dead. It is fine to leave the snail in the tank if you want to leave the shell in their for decoration.
