In the past, i have had a 10 gallon tank set up with a sand bottom. Initially, water was 5 gallons tap water and 5 gallons pond water. Evaporated water was replaced with tap water only. No filtration (aside from some duckweed floating around), no lid, and lots of direct sunlight. The water was pea green (I could not see all the way through the small tank), but there was no odor!!

Anyway, i put a dozen or so ghost shrimp in it out of curiosity. They bred like crazy, and grew huge. I never added a drop of food in it, so I assume they were eating whatever little critters that hitched a ride with the pond water. I culled them as food for my African Knife fish.

The only drawback was a less then thrilled wife. After 8 months or so, my "bucket of green soup with crawly things in it" had to leave. She has since grown to love fish (my 150 gal long tank is her favorite), so i may try this again shortly.

I have had equally impressive results with this setup and baby guppies.

I think Mario meant to say that they're eat anything because they are not picky at all.

Fish flakes, pellets, etc.
