I am thinking of buying ghost shrimp instead of plecos, ottos or chinese algea eaters. I have a 40G tank with:

2-dwarf cockatoo cichlids
2-Harlequin rasbora
3-black widow
1-black ghost knife
2-platy
3-zebra danio

Would you guys or ladies recommend ghost shrimp and how many? Also, would the ghost shrimp defeat the purpose of a gravel vac if they eat everything? Please advice.

Thanks.

Personally I've never had ghost shrimp that ate algae, so you might want to reconsider having an algae eater.

They won't replace a gravel vac because they will eat leftover food & such, but not fish waste.

A general rule is you can keep ~1 per gallon.

They eat algae, just not very much. They might become snacks to some of your fish. You can put in more than the 1gal rule.Their effect on bioload is next to nothing.

You will still need (I should say Always need) your gravel vac. I believe that your BGK and Cockatoos will LOVE any ghost shrimp you get. If you have an algae problem, and water changes, vacs, and other plants don't keep it at bay, then consider a BN or a grouping (3-6) of Otos.

I would get rid of the platies, add 3 more zebras, get some ghost shrimp, and most importantly GET RID OF THE BGK! With a potential size of 18" long, you'll need at least a 125gal tank to properly house it.

Actually, Ghost Shrimp eat fish waste. Mine ate the fish waste at the bottom of the tank and kept it quite clean. I would say, you still would need a some type of algae eater. I would recommend ottos, plecos produce more waste than they consume. For Ghost Shrimp, you could keep way over 40 in there. Maybe even 60 or so. They have a very small bio-load. I would say you could get about 20 or so ghost shrimp and a group of ottos.

I would rather get rid of all the fish before I got rid of my BGK. I am well aware of how big they get, but he/she is only 5" at the moment. I will in a year or so when I buy a house be upgrading to a 120g tank or bigger. Thank you for the concern and warning. About the ghost shrimp, thank you for the replies, but why do you think I should get rid of the platy? If I get rid of the platy, can I or should I get some german blue ram to add to my tank or would I be overstocking?

Cheers.

How about some Amano shrimp or cherry red shrimp to go with the ghost shrimp? They're both pretty good at keeping the algae in tank to a minimum.

However, be careful with the larger fish as they will see the shrimp, especially small cherry reds as nice snacks.

ghost shrimp are most surely going to be eaten by these fish if they are of any size or aggressive
