Part of it is probably because there are a few different species that get called ghost shrimp. In a store tank full of healthy ghost shrimp(not starving) females will be carrying eggs or baby shrimp. Usually the eggs I see are bright green and the babies are darker than the mother. More orangish probably from being rolled up in a ball so all you see is there digestive tract and internal organs. Some sources say the female is bigger than the male by half an inch and others say the male is bigger than the female. Some sites also say the male will have 1 large claw but none of mine do and some sites say the eggs are pink. To raise baby shrimp you need a tank with no fish. Even small fish will attack baby ghost shrimp. Some moss is also a big plus. Freshwater baby shrimp will eat the same as the adults. There are brackish water ghost shrimp which produce larvae and are far more difficult to breed. Mine weren't too hard until the sparkling gouramis discovered baby shrimp in the moss. The female held the eggs underneath her until the babies hatched about 2 days after I bought her. Then she carried the babies around feeding them and rolling them around with her legs. After about 5days she stood on the top of a rock and rolled them all to the front to let them go. They went into the moss(very hard to see) and lived for about a week before the gouramis found them. |
