I had about 10 or 12 of these guys in my 40 gal. long. Today I have notest one was dead and since then I have seen two of them that have turned orangish and have been sucked on to my intake for my filter.

What might be going on? I don't have any test readings being I am a poor college kid and don't have a kit yet.

You'd need to test the water to be sure especially since shrimp are very sensitive to ammonia. Your water could also contain a high level of metals which inverts don't tolerate well. You might be able to get a test done if you take a plastic bag of water to a fish store or even petstore that sells a few fish. It may not be the most accurate test but would at least tell you if you have any ammonia or nitrites in the water.
