We have one type of shrimp, no amanos no cherries nothing fun.

Happily, nothing could be further from the truth - Australia possesses a truly enviously broad range of freshwater shrimp, including several particularly beautiful Caridina spp. that should serve as admirably fine cherry shrimp analogues. Granted, one would likely have to collect them oneself.

Look to http://pandora.nla.gov.au/pan/21803/20010913/members.optushome.com.au/chelmon/Shrimp.htm for images and information concerning Australian shrimp in freshwater aquaria.

General information:

"Atyidae live in many types of water body but prefer comparatively still waters where they congregate under banks, large submerged boulders and aquatic vegetation. Most prefer surface-waters but the genus Atya comprises more robust, coloured forms that walk on the bottom.

The Palaemonidae (prawns) differ from Atyidae in having the second pair of legs greatly elongate and ending in rather slender claws. The Parasticidae (crayfish) differ in having the first pair of legs robust and ending in strong claws.

All other shrimp-like animals (Anostraca, Syncarida, some Amphipoda and Isopoda), except Thermosbaenecea, are without a carapace. The Thermosbaenecea have a carapace joined to the head but leaving the thorax free. A single species 1-1.5mm in length is known from a single cave in WA.

Atyidae are distributed in every State but are most common in the eastern half of the continent. The Australian Atyidae are placed in genera Paratya, Atya, Caridina, Caridinites, Stygiocaris, Parisia, Pycneus and Pycnisia. Paratya australiensis is the most widespread species of small freshwater shrimp in eastern Australia. Keys to genera are given by Williams (1980) and Choy and Horwitz (1995)."

*scratches head*

So we have caridina sp.? and nobody is farming them for sale??

I have never seen any anywhere, and I am the girl that waddles around knee-deap and dangling upside-down from rotting logs with a net and bucket!

More searching I guess, have to find more specific loctations for collecting.

Tropical temps for the australiense IMO, I tried CW and it failed miserably.

mid 70's always worked for me for the atyidae shrimp, however they probably prefer it much colder. I catch them in dams that get pretty cold, so 70's is prpbably top of their tolerances.

Is this the long arm shrimp you have?

thats exactly what mine looks like! check out the photos of her on this post on petshimp.com. i was convinced it was a female, is that correct? is the claw/arm size the only way you can tell?

http://www.petshrimp.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?t=864&highlight=

such a cool ittle fellow. so tropical temperatures, eh? the reason i thought cold temps would be good is bc i suspect she(?) came from the murray, and i just guessed cooler temps would be correct. im actually in the process of setting up a new tank for the fella so i guess i should go buy a heater! excellent! that means i can keep some tropical temperature fish to keep with her!

The feeder shrimp we sell here are ghost shrimp (glass shrimp). How much do Amano shrimp go for over there?

The feeder ghost shrimp sold in North America are Palaemonetes spp., whereas those available in Australia - which possesses but one geographically restricted species of that genus - are typically indigenous Paratya spp. (fellow Atyids fairly equivalent, in a manner of speaking, to Amanos).

Wait... If ghost shrimp are $3.00 over there, do you have feeder shrimp?

Our store sells ghost/glass shrimp for $0.15 each, and even with the conversion rates and the fact that most things are more expensive in Oz, $3.00 still seems like a bit much.

I'm sorry to say that I must disagree - there is, admittedly, no empirical evidence to the effect that freshwater shrimp can even metabolize aqueous iodine
Cool, another thing I dont need to buy
