thats exactly what mine looks like! check out the photos of her on this post on petshimp.com. i was convinced it was a female, is that correct? is the claw/arm size the only way you can tell?

such a cool ittle fellow. so tropical temperatures, eh? the reason i thought cold temps would be good is bc i suspect she(?) came from the murray, and i just guessed cooler temps would be correct. im actually in the process of setting up a new tank for the fella so i guess i should go buy a heater! excellent! that means i can keep some tropical temperature fish to keep with her!

They're likely Paratya australiensis (as opposed to the Palaemonetes spp. and Macrobrachium spp. North American and Asian hobbyists respectively reference by the term). Could you more precisely describe the location of said "dots"?

Well, thier kindof where I can imagine "joints" to be, & maybe along its "spine" but not on its sides, they seem a little bit small to be 'White spot' so.. im not sure.

I looked at them again & they looked "clear" I decided to try & put some of my tank water in with them so I moved thier plastic bag (thier still floating as I type) a couple of seconds later (after giving up trying to take the rubber band off with my bare hands) they had that yellow tinge..

Does this help

Rest assured that invertebrates cannot serve as vectors for white spot. In any case, the coloration you describe does not seem particularly out of the ordinary. As for breeding concerns, P. australiensis larvae require brackish water to develop.

Well I dont *think* they have the same stripe along thier back as this but im not sure, could the yellowness have come from stress?

Well, I just went out & bought some "glass shrimp" from "Pets R fun".. But I have some questions about them..

~Are thay supposed to look slightly yellow when not under much light?
~Are they supposed to have litte "bubble" like dots on them? (I hope thier not sick )
~Whats thier ideal temperature?
& ~ I got 4, will breeding be a problem?

Thanks

They tend to molt when put in new water conditions. Make sure you provide hiding places for them because they are easy prey after they molt. Adding a small amount of marine iodine has been proven to help with molting and increase the survival rate of shrimp.

I got a little worried about the dots too, but they are on every joint, and diseases aren't usualy that precise.

marine iodine
Hmm, I'll need to get some of that (will it affect my bettas?)
Nice shrimp calla!

They hide underneath the d-wood most of the day when the light is on, but when it turns off they seem to come out a little

Thanks everyone

I'm sorry to say that I must disagree - there is, admittedly, no empirical evidence to the effect that freshwater shrimp can even metabolize aqueous iodine, and my personal experiences lead me to concur. However, I would be intrigued to see a long-term controlled experiment centered about the utility of such additives to be conducted.

While fertilization, presence of regularly ovigerous females, and even release of planktonic young are far from uncommon occurences, the latter require water of brackish salinity to develop into benthic post-larvae (essentially, miniature adults). If you wish to rear any P. australiensis larvae to maturity, I suggest following standard procedure for the Amano shrimp, C. japonica, as detailed under the 'Breeding' segment here.

I've heard from several people and companies I've ordered shrimp from that they've lost alot fewer shrimp do to molting complications when using iodine. Using it over a year many people said they'd lost 1/4th as many shrimp as when they didn't use iodine. Unfortunately I haven't found where anyone has done a true experiment with shrimp and iodine. In my searches for care info most sites seem to recommend at least a few drops of marine iodine monthly. So far I haven't lost any of my shrimp since I added them 10months ago. There are around 1 dozen rainbow shrimp in my 55g, 2 ghost shrimp in the 5g, and 4 ghost shrimp in the 20g.
