I had 2 snails now I have about 200 WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH THEM?! | |
bluejett Fingerling Posts: 22 Kudos: 11 Votes: 0 Registered: 07-Jul-2004 | lol. My LFS wont take them So if theyre pond snails can I let them loose in my lake? Oh and yesterday one of them crawled out and was laying out side of the bowl trying to get to another bowl with nothing in it but water. Is that something pond snails do? I know mystery and apple snails can go outside of the water but I know theyre not those. |

agent_alice Hobbyist Posts: 114 Kudos: 115 Votes: 0 Registered: 11-Jul-2004 | i had that problem once, i got one snail for free with my fish, hopping that it would reduce the algae problem, but soon i had tens of them. I don't know how, but after a while they all disappeared, maybe because of bad conditions or something (not like my fish could eat them, i had some mollies and a betta). Afterwards, when i was cleaning my tank, i found lots of tiny dead shells in the gravel. If the loach eats the snails, does he only eat the meaty part, or the shell too? |

bluejett Fingerling Posts: 22 Kudos: 11 Votes: 0 Registered: 07-Jul-2004 | I was gonna get some ghost shrimp but that would be an hours drive unless I wanted to go to wal-mart again so I smashed them I felt bad because one of them was crawling up the wall with its shell hanging off They were slimy. I even smashed my biggest one which I really liked. But I knew I still hd more snails in my tank and probably eggs too so I`ll have plenty moreugh Thanks everyone for the help! |

~jamie~ Big Fish Posts: 463 Kudos: 671 Votes: 65 Registered: 08-May-2004 | I would just like to add one more thing that may help just keep the snail population "in check". In my 10g I was trying to breed snails for my friend who has a big tank with clown loaches. I would notice that the snail would lay eggs in the hornwart plant and the next day the eggs were gone! This has been going on for weeks, my tank should be infested w/snails by now... I finally figured out that the ghost shrimp are eating the snail eggs! So if you can get yourself some ghost shrimp and squish the snails that are already there, you soon will be snail free! (The shrimp will also help eat up the squished snails along with your other fish). Furthermore, the snails will help keep your tank clean by eating up the leftover food/decay. Give it a try and see what happens! Edit: Good luck! Let us know what happens. [span class="edited"][Edited by Phone'sMate 2004-07-11 11:40][/span] |

jase101 Big Fish Posts: 345 Kudos: 273 Votes: 1 Registered: 06-Jul-2004 | releasing the snails is tantamount to ecological terrorism!! go to your lfs and buy snailrid - it's a copper-ba (i'm an aussie and we have a very unfortunate track record with releasing non-native species - it's never a good idea, no matter how benign the species seems) |

I`m gonna call my LFS and see if they will take them but I doubt it. I think theyre pond snails or something. their shells arent pointed. |

Godburger Fingerling Posts: 34 Kudos: 16 Votes: 0 Registered: 21-May-2004 | I'm beginning to have the same problem. I noticed 1 on monday. I thought "no big deal". Then last night I noticed two more small ones. At first the one just stayed on the glass. But the two small ones were on my plants munching away. I quickly put and end to all 3 of them, and my platy's absolutely went nuts for them. I have a bad feeling that I'm going to be seeing plenty more in the near future. Looks like it's time to dig through the old bucket of pennies and see how many oldies I can find. |

I`m planning on getting rid of 1 of the cories. |

Small or mid-size loaches would be fine. The penny idea sounds like it's worth a try, I think some commerical snail products contain copper If you want to get a bunch out at once, float some lettuce in the tank. Usually overnight and they'll be all over it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |
