Are MTS good algae eaters?

Is a gravel or sand substrate absolutely necessary for them or would they be ok in a tank a large pebble (min size ~1" substrate?

don't know about the substrate. they like to bury themselves during the day, so as long as they can still do that they should be fine. mine are good at eating algae off the glass, but my fish eat the rest of it.

With mine, I see little snail prints all over my algae covered front ... (I just cleaned off the algae today - I've been busy - so leave me alone )

I rarely ever see mine except when I turn on my light and they they fly to bury themselves under my sand. I really am not sure about gravel size, but I don't see how they can bury themselves in pebbles ... *am now confused* It's worth a try though
