My gold mystery snails ate all the vegetation in my tank. Even the plant bulbs. I think they need to be able to lay their eggs above the water line.

Apple snail is a name given to quite a few snails. These snails have a few characteristics in common that make them "apple snails".

Two of the most common (and easily confused) are P. Bridgesi and P. Cana. Cana gets tennis ball sized and will eat all your plants, however Bridg stays small and leaves healthy plants alone.
