What kind of snails are usually found on plants when you buy them?

thats almost impossible to answer, as different retailers have different snails in their plant tanks. and all kinds of random hitch hikes end up in there.

Most common are probably physid species and then planorbids. But there are actually 100s of species you could end up with. Any of the ones on this site wouldn't be impossible http://applesnail.net/content/snails_various.php

Once I got a plant w/ snail eggs... Soon my tank was infested. Inklings right. They usually are un-desired types.

If pets are so stupid, how did they weasel free room and board out of us?

The most common "pest" snails in planted tanks are pond, the small sp. of ramshorn, MTS, and limpets. All of these can be kept with even delicate plants without issue and at worst will eat dying plants. You can keep population in check by limiting their food source: 1)not overfeeding and 2)keeping healthy plants.
