Some snails came with my plants several weeks back and have increased in population rather drastically. I had first thought that these snails were pond snails. But upon some investigation, I realized that they may not be so. But I still do not know exactly what they are. They look similar to Malaysian Trumpet Snails but the spiral is very short and the snails are very small, no more than 5cm at most. Could they be juvenile?

MTS are livebearers so it sounds like they could be juveniles.

Here's a pic I took recently with a dime to give size perspective:

The snails in my tank dont look like that. The spirals are much shorter and the snails are darker in color. Plus they seem to be eating my plants.

Probably not MTS then, especially if they're eating your plants.

I found that these snails are Black Mystery Snails after comparing them to some that my local pet store was selling. And it no longer looks like that the snails were eating my plants. Are these snails beneficial to a tank?

Check out the "Invert" forum here for info on "apple snails". And another good website is www.applesnail.net.

Their only real benefit is the appreciation you have for them. Like most other fish and inverts, they benefit from you, not the other way around. They don't "clean" your tank or anything. They actually contribute more to the bioload than a similarly sized fish. Personally, I think they're great.
