![]() | Setting up Brackish Conditions for Nerite Snail Eggs |
daviine![]() Enthusiast Posts: 168 Kudos: 31 Registered: 28-Aug-2001 ![]() ![]() | My Nerites have been laying eggs all over my tank, much to my dismay. DO they ever go away? Will I have to manually remove scrape them? I am thinking of taking of bring them to my classroom becasue of the egg situation. However, my students are now interested in trying to breed the snails. How do I go about this? Has anyone here done this successfully? Thanks in advance for any help you can give. |

I just kinda stumbled onto your post.. Nerite snails will lay lots of eggs in freshwater but will not hatch without brackish conditions.. They are also rumored to be next to impossible to breed, although I'm sure it's been done.. The babies start as larvae then hit the snail stage later.. In this stage infusoria is their main food. A google search on Breeding Nerite Snails will turn up more specific info. Nerites are great algae eaters in planted tanks, being 'plant safe' and their shells are quite nice. My friend Suzy just bought 6 Nerites and she may be trying to breed in a brackish setup.. I'd think you'd slowly raise the level of salt over periods of time and monitor the eggs until you get a hatch, that would be a starting point.. This would be sea salt, not freshwater aquarium salt. Good luck ! The Amazon Nut... |
