Each individual apple snail, though containing both male and female "features" , each indivdual snail has a dominant gender---and acts accordingly, producing only sperm or ova. Thus, apple snails are usually referred to as male or female, and are not truly hermaphroditic, unlike many other FW gastropods. That's what I remember, anyways. I'm not too sure, however, on how to sex them, as I'm not an expert in mollusk anotomy .

The apple snail has separated sexes (dioecious) and is NOT a hermaphroditic snail

This is a qoute taken from www.applesnail.net
Go to this website and scroll down to the reproductive system. While you are there you might as well read the rest of the info on apple snails

Applesnails are not hermaphrodites. You need a male and a female snail to have baby snails. The male parts on an applesnail are just under the shell on your left if the opening is pointed at you. The problem is to see it the snail has to be hanging out of it's shell. Something they don't like to do when out of water. On thin shelled light snails like ivory you can tell the difference but I forget if it's males or females that have a dark spot. The snail on top is male lol

actually, applesnail.net says if you want to tell the difference, you hold the snail upside down out of the water and blow cool air across its opening. this is supposed to induce the snail to try to right itself by coming out of its shell. it is supposed to be obvious whether you have a male or not.
