Shrimp tank. INFO please | |
tetraman1225 Banned Posts: 155 Kudos: 51 Votes: 0 Registered: 03-May-2003 | I am interested in setting up a shrimp tank. My 29 will be heavily planted. I want it to be only shrimp and maybe ottos to get the algae on the glass. I especially want to here from and see the beautiful pics of Sunflwrgrl Tsu shrimp tank. I want it to be 8 rudolph the rednosed shrimp. ( from arizona gardens ) and 7 bumblebee shrimp. ( like the ones from sunflwrgrl's tank. ) does this sound good? Has anybody gotten these shrimp to breed? and any info and espeially pics of your shrimp or shrimp tank will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

It seems they are hard to get in the U.S. which I didn't realize when I got them! I've since had someone drive down from Maryland to get some from me because he'd been trying a year and a half to get them. |

Piscesgirl Mega Fish Posts: 1305 Kudos: 892 Votes: 0 Registered: 30-Mar-2003 | I only have Crystal Red Bee Shrimp and Cherry Shrimp. I'm located in Henderson, North Carolina. I don't sell shrimp. I gave some to that guy in Maryland with certain limitations (i.e. not to keep them with fish, and nothing smaller than a 10 gallon tank). I won't ship them -- they are my 'children' and I can't imagine even one death. I assume he may eventually sell some. My shrimp multiply extremely fast -- I'd say there is probably sixty to a hundred shrimp in there. |

Piscesgirl Mega Fish Posts: 1305 Kudos: 892 Votes: 0 Registered: 30-Mar-2003 | Did you get my PM? I have trouble posting pictures here from Imagestation, and I don't like to keep making my pictures smaller to upload here. However, here is a few. I use Nutrafin Max Spirulina tablets, although Drs.Fosterandsmith dont seem to list them in their catalog, so I need to get some more. That is a 100% vegie food as opposed to a lot of algae wafers. I also use Nutrafin Max Spirulina flakes -- those are not 100% vegie. I smash the tablets in a paper towel with a knife handle. I would be cautious not to use anything with copper in it, and preferably a tank that never had copper in it (i.e. ick medicines as well). Piscesgirl Mega Fish Posts: 1305 Kudos: 892 Votes: 0 Registered: 30-Mar-2003 | This is a very high light tank (148 watts of compact fluorescent light at the moment) with two bottles of DIY CO2 and I have a lot of rare plants in there. You don't need to make this much of an effort. The shrimp appreciate any type of plants -- especially Java Moss. I would go with what YOU want and what your budget allows. I personally find they do very well with a little Indian Almond leaf in the water as well. |

Piscesgirl Mega Fish Posts: 1305 Kudos: 892 Votes: 0 Registered: 30-Mar-2003 | Those aren't really clear shrimp -- they are baby Cherry Reds. Keep in mind those in the picture are less than 2 mm in size (except the 'big' Crystal Red - who is maybe an inch). My Cherry shrimp seem to sometimes be lighter and sometimes be darker, but the babies are always very light red. It seems their color varies with my calcium carbonate -- I have very soft water and keeping the carbonate level is a chore with the plants and the snails competing with the shrimp for calcium. I may break down and add some crushed coral, but I have in the past liked better to be able to control the amount I put in there. Indian Almond Leaves are Terminalia Catappa - Indian Almond Tree leaves. They are used a lot for Bettas in Asia. They can be purchased on ebay as well. I have purchased them in tea bag form, available from one particular Betta Breeder. They arent cheap, but I enjoy the ease of use. If you want a link, I can give you one. I soak the bag in the filter for two days, then discard. I don't do this with every water change, but more like every few water changes. |
