So my sisters betta died, I now have a 6 gallon hex tank @my disposal again.....As of now the tank's unfiltered, but I've been thinking of doing the DIY film cannister filters. There is a heater, but I'd rather NOT use it. While it is 6 gallons, it's a tall tank, I was thinking of doing land and water, maybe a waterfall or something....

Anyway....what should go in it ....I need something small that can handle temps of 60F-85/90F, isnt' too expensive, wont' require live foods and be fussy. Maybe a snail, maybe a shrimp ???

^_^

That's quite a temperature spread. Shrimp like it cooler, while the snails like ] 80F.

White cloud mountain minnows prefer cooler temps. They can be fed on flake food, and are pretty hardy, if that's what you mean.

Wcmms and apple snails. Bridgessi's will eat veggies, algea wafers, and flakes that the fish didnt get to.

WCMM's are too big for this tank....

Yes it is quite a temp spread, winter and summer so that wouldnt' be the fluctuation each day.

Ooh, do Cherry Red Shrimp, they're cool. And you could breed them, too.
I vote for: stuff the tank with Java moss and anubias, maybe a little windelov java fern if you've got it.

You might try some Killifish,Babel.

Most shrimp will not do very well much over 80 degrees (although I've heard Amanos do ok with that).

I was thinking about killies too...did just a bit of reading: Most Killies will do fine at room temperature, around 70 degrees (F), they will be happy in as little as 1 gallon per pair and have no need for extra lighting or fancy filters.

yes i think shrimp would be a good idea for something that looks a little diffrent! but i cant seem to find any in sydney

i see some people are suggesting killifish, i also was considering killifish but i rarely see the in LFSs in sydney and cant seem to find much information on them in fish books and on the web (there is no profile on killies yet on this site is there?) which lead me to believe that they must be difficult fish to keep. or is that just a myth? if so why do they seem to be unpopular?

They're not difficult - the reason they're not common in fish stores is because they are difficult to breed in bulk and are more specialized than your average fish at this point in time. Just different, not harder. But you;ve probably seen Golden Wonders in your local pet store once or twice - that's a killi that's easy to breed in good numbers and has really taken off in the hobby.

Most of the killies around here start @$15 each....while I might be addicted, I'm not that crazy ..... most I ever paid for a fish was under $5.

As for the shrimp, they have a min temp (according to az gardens) of 70F and a max of 82F ...if anyone knows differently from experience I'll be glad for the info .

Personally, I would think that is correct, Babel -- at least with the Amanos, Cherry shrimp, and Crystal Reds. There may be some others that may be more cool water?
