2day i got a sword for my 10g planted tank, on this sword, came a bunch of these little guys (not same color)along w/ some eggs of some sort(i have the leaf w/ the eggs in a glass jar on the desk till i find out what they belong to)

i was told by a friend *cough*scott*cough* that they were MTS, however, 2night i recieved news, that they probabbly weren't MTS, if anyone has any idea bout these little guys, please help, (example: do they harm plants, how big do they get, do they eat algea) and anything else you can add that would be helpful, thanx

That's a pond snail. No need to keep them unless you have loaches or puffers. They will multiply VERY quickly. If you don't want them all over your tank, remove them.

if the snail body has a trap door at the end of it, then it's a form of apple snail. if the body is completely tapered, similar to [link=this]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v601/hmlaird/snails/malaysiantrumpetsnailmelanoidestuberculata.bmp" style="COLOR: #ff0044[/link], then it is an mts. otherwise, you have a "pest" snail which will harm your plants and multiply like crazy until your tank is overrun.

kuhli loaches *might* eat snails, but don't count on any of those fish taking care of them. just drop about 5-8 pennies in your filter and leave it for about a month. then you can take them out and you can even put good snails in the tank later make sure you get pennies minted before 1982, because after 1982 they are only copper plated.

I've seen a few snails here and there in my tank. They are very tiny and resemble the mystery snails except small -- maybe 4mm small. I generally remove them as they crawl up the tank sides and have never seen them to a degree I have concerns with them taking over. But I don't want them. I had a beautiful apple snail that lived a long life then died when I had a nitrate spike. I've not replaced him since I was thinking about attempting to first rid my tank of the small uninvited snails.

I've done the piece of cucumber in the tank and have three loaches (weather and two khuli) but I don't know if they help. I have seen some products the LFS sells that is suppose to kill snails when added to the water -- one of those add 10 drops per so many gallons once week until you no longer see snails.

I'm leary though -- just hate adding chemicals to the tank. Has anyone used any of these products or can recommend some specific ones? I have a community tank, 90 gallons, pH in the midrange (6.5, 7.0), ammonia almost non-existant, nitrates in the lower ranges and my water temp is consistent around 70. My tank has some live plants.

Thx -- Rae
