I have what I've seen labeled as a golden snail. I bought it when it was really small and now it's quite large. At the same time I bought another snail labled simply as a mystery snail. That guy died about two weeks ago unexpectedly. His shell had started to get ruts in it and it and lost some of its color. It almost seemed like he had outgrown it (which I'm sure was not the case). I noticed this morning that now my golden snails shell isn't looking too great and he was floating at the top of the tank this morning. I had to go to work so I didn't have time to grab him and make sure he was alive. Any thoughts on what's going on?? Should I be supplementing my water with something to make their shells grow correctly? This the first experience I've had with anything other than pond snails.

check your water hardness, both gh and kh, and let us know what they read. you probably need to be putting some crushed coral in your tank to boost the hardness, it sounds like your snails have used up what was there already.

Thanks. I'll have to take a sample to the store. My test kit doesn't have anything to test hardness.

The ph of the water must be high, so the Apple Snails will keep a hard shell. You can use Limestone rocks, sea cuttle & crushed corals to raise it.
