I had two small apple snails in a 5 gallon tank. Both seemed to be thriving and were definitely well-fed. However, I discovered one of them in the process of eating the other a few days ago. Should I assume that the dead one was dead before the other one started to eat it, or is it possible that, well, it wasn't? I'm just curious, because I can't think of any reason for the snail to have died.

apple snails are not known to be killers. most likely the other one died and the live one saw a free meal.

If they are the same species then it died before being eaten. Occasionally 2 different species in a small or overcrowded tank will take out the competition.
