Hey everyone,
I brought some java moss home a couple of weeks ago, and thought i had removed all of the snails i found in it, but apparently not. I now have 2 different kinds of snails in my tanks, that must have come from the moss. Trouble is, they have had babies. I dont even know what kind of snails they are. Here is the description to the best of my ability, i will try to post pics soon,
1st snail
larger, about 1/2 diameter, looks somewhat like a common garden snail, but smaller. The spiral on the shell sticks out on one side, and is inverted on the other. He is a dark brown color.

2nd snail
This snail is about the same size, but has a long pointy shell, also dark brown in color.

any ideas?

Sam

2nd snail sounds like it might be an MTS (Malaysian Trumpet Snail). If it is they will be safe for your tank, so you will be ok.

the 1st sounds like our usual pain in the rear snail that we all hate and end up dealing with at some point or another]:| Here is the deal, you see it, you smush it, crush it, pull it out, flush it, feed it to cichlids, just get rid of it...to help with the baby snails, look on the glass of your tank, and scrub off any little bubble like things, these are the eggs.

I've heard that putting in a nice size piece of leafy lettuce will attract them so that you can collect them, but it didn't work for memy fish ate it

Oh here is a picture of mts, the other I know needs to go...best of luck, heidi

Heck just realized I have a picture of the troublesome snail also This is the one that if you can bare the crunch the snail will make crush it in the tank, the fishies will love to eat the remains But, trust me it takes awhile to get used to the crunch feel, if you are very tactile in nature

Best of luck again, heidi

I see that Heidi was in a terrible mood yesterday. All of Heidi's suggestions would make you feel like you are doing something positive, but in the end, Heidi ended up adding clown loaches to her tank to help control those pesky snails.

I agree, the cone-shaped snail is probably a Malaysian trumpet snail. They won't bother plants, help by burrowing in the substrate, and they're livebearers.

I've had some luck using lettuce but it never seems to get rid of all the snails. I once emptied a tank that had snails (for other reasons) and I was amazed at how many eggs there were. The eggs are usually on the sides, in kind of a clear, jelly-like substance.

Depending on the size of your tank and space available adding loaches is a good option. Clowns are large, but most Botias will take care of them.

I tried crushing them once, its like squashing glass, it went straight through my finger and i still get shivers thinking about it!
