Well, I'm doing a routine gravel vac, and I discovered a tiny snail on one of my plants. This is the 1st snail I've ever seen in my tank. Did he come in with the plant when I bought it? I got the plant about 5 months ago. Are there probably more snails? Will they mutliply? Most importantly - what are the pros and cons of having snails in the tank?

Are there more snails?

I'm about 99.99999% sure that there are more snails in that tank than just that one...

Will they multiply?

Let's see...rabbits learned how to multiply from snails...

Pros?

Depending on the type, they can eat algae and help clean extra gunk from your gravel...

Cons?

Again, depending on the type, they can eat plants and become a rather unsightly presence when inhabiting a tank en masse...

If they are Malaysian Trumpet Snails, they won't eat plants. If they are regular pond snails, they will. I recommend you check out some pictures of each species online, and then determine whether you want them or not. If you don't, there are multiple ways to get rid of them...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

I have a problem with pond snails in one of my tanks - they came free with some plants.

They have now just become part of a routine - everytime I see one I squish it...!!!!

I don't really want them in my tank - what's the best way to efficiently get rid of them without harming my fish?
