As an early b-day present a friend gave me one of those Triops kits to keep in the dorms. This I find pretty cool since I've never had Triops and have always been tempted. But now that I have them, I'd like to take care of them properly.

My questions:
1. What kind and how deep of sand should I put? They give a certain amount of sand already, but I want what's best, after all. Knowing that they are benthic egg-layers, I don't want the sand to be too shallow (and too deep would be a pain as well with anaerobes). Also, is Southdown okay? It's aragonite-based and can raise the pH.

2. Can eggs die from being submerged too long?

I would go with the alotted amount of sand. Whether or not the aragonite is fine, I do not know, though I would assume so. You can keep the eggs submerged for quite a while; in fact, I'd wait until your first stock dies off before harvesting them. Keep us posted--I've always wanted triops ;D.

I would go with the alotted amount of sand if I thought the container they provided was any good. I would say that the container in the box holds about like 4 cups of water. IMO for an approximately 2" crustacean that probably isn't enough, and am going to look into getting a tupperware container at the very least, 'cuz one would definitely provide more room.:%)

Maybe just pour the sand in to the given container, roughly estimate the depth, and follow suit in the tupperware bin.
