What kind of snails are these? | |

Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 | Ok within the past week I have noticed 3 new snails in my tank They apparently came in on the last batch of plants I bought ...When I first noticed them they looked like small MTS but a bit rounder. Now they are beginning to look more like mystery snails...which would be a good name for them since it is a mystery to me as to which kind they are...could some tell me what kind they are? Are they safe for my plants like the MTS, or are they gonna eat my plants? Should I just yank them out, put them back in a ziplock, and return them to the LFS where they came from (not telling the lfs that I'm returning them of course ). As of right now they are about 1/2 inch across...and I figure they move about 25 ft/hr (yes, I was bored this morning:%)) Here's some pictures of the "mysteries" right side up upside down close up right side up good picture of the coloring (pale brown with darker spots) in the tank clinging to the top of the water how don't ask me... Not 100% sure what it is but i thought the coil was real cool. Any way they seem to be able to survive freezing water as they were out doors in a pond. |

Some kinds eat plants and some just clean algae off of everything. Or you could go to The Apple Snail website and see if you can identify them your self. http://www.applesnail.net/ |

If you keep them you'll finish up with thousands of them................ http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 | Thanks everyone...after chatting with Babel last night I went home, and tried to drop the cell phone in the tank as I was yanking them out. (My b/f got a kick out of the fact that he almost went for a swim ) I couldn't think of smushing them as they were about 1/2 inch across, and that just seemed....yuck!!! in my opinion, so i plucked them out and flushed them down in the toilet...There were only four that I saw, if I see any more well, they will find the same ending...Oh and by the way they did not have a door, so it would have become a dooming force for me Today though at the lfs, I had my arms all in the tank (Les is going to kill me one of these days ) smushing the snails in the plant tanks that they came from...so there, some are now gone!!!
